Recapping the WB Hall H Panel with Wonder Woman 1984 Footage and More!

Recapped the WB Hall H panel with Wonder Woman 1984 footage & more!

With many of the biggest guns of recent Comic-Con’s – Marvel, Star Wars, Game of Thrones – sitting out 2018 it was left to Warner Bros. to bring the thunder in Hall H this year and the studio did it’s best to deliver. Beginning with it’s now de rigueur opening of the hall’s side screens — which expand the viewing field for various presentations to create a more immersive experience – Warner Bros. launched into a mammoth two hour presentation which never let up.

Starting and ending with the biggest films the studio has on hand for the rest of the year, moderator Aisha Tyler launched right into Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (as we were shown several times, it’s a German w, pronounced like a v) with an interactive opening thanks to wrist bans everyone was given which lit up on cue starting with series’ star Eddie Redmayne’s appearance on the dark stage. He was quickly joined by the rest of the cast including a giddy cosplaying Ezra Miller and new young Dumbledore Jude Law.

“I really like how you call him young Dumbledore, because I’m 45 and I do not feel young,” Law said. He went on to suggest Grindelwald would be the darkest of all the Potter films to date, a sentiment shared by the rest of the cast who also described the film as “labyrinthine” and “bananas.”

Everything film related went out the window once the audience began asking questions, however, with Leta Lestrange actress Zoe Kravitz suggesting the best use of real magic would be to impeach the president, followed by the cast dissecting exactly how that would work with the returning Jacob Kowalski actor Dan Fogler (the cast-admitted master of creating new spells).

All of that was put aside when the stage went dark and erupted in smoke as Johnny Depp took over in costume and character as Gellart Grindelwald to deliver a personal call to arms to the audience which hearkened back to Tom Hiddleston’s well-received turn in Hall H as Loki several years ago.

“Magic blooms only in rare souls. It is granted to those who live for higher purposes. What a world we would make for all of humanity,” Depp as Grindelwald intoned, waving his wand about with a fair amount of dexterity. “We, who live for freedom, for truth — the moment has come to rise up and take our rightful place in the world.”

With no one interested in topping that the presentation zoomed on to The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part with actors Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks and Stephanie Beatriz joined on stage by producers Chris Lord and Phil Miller (who had broken his wrist and naturally decorated his cast to look like the Infinity Gauntlet).

“The film has two amazing casts!” Lord deadpanned.

Showing of some stunning new footage of the upcoming film (including a great little teaser with Jason Mamoa’s Aquaman meeting his classic blonde counterpart) the filmmakers delved into some of the ideas behind the sequel.

“We wanted to start right where the other left off, the idea of combining two different imaginations – so maybe Finn’s sister is involved in this one – and that would be like a new universe,” Miller said. “It’s a metaphor guys.”

Once again everything derailed during audience questions, turning into a long discussion about places on the body you should never stick a LEGO. Which is a good time to move on to…

GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS!

The new film will feature Godzilla doing battle with many monsters around the world as the secret organization MONARCH and the governments of the world try to decide what to do with them and if they can co-exist.

“MONARCH, which was much more crypto is now not a secret anymore; the cat is out of the bag,” cast member Vera Farmiga said. “It’s their mission to preserve these creatures and to figure them out.”

“At the start of the film there is this debate that monsters are real and people are concerned because we see cities being destroyed and whether to get rid of them or use them as a resource,” director Michael Dougherty added.

Primarily the presentation was an outlet for premiering the new trailer for the third of Legendary’s Monster-Verse films, but it also gave Stranger Things fans a chance to find out just how British star Millie Bobbie Brown is (the answer is ‘very’) as she along with Farmiga, Thomas Middleditch and O’Shea Jackson joined Dougherty in stoking up the audience. All they really needed to do for that was unleash Jackson on the audience who was positively giddy about the whole thing.

“I was waiting for this movie. I got thrown into acting a bit but this is why you do it,” Jackson said, stating that he had no problems visualizing the beast during his scenes. “I’ve been waiting for this my whole life. We heard him roar.”

That last wasn’t metaphorical. Director Dougherty gathered up the classic roars of the various monsters the film will feature (including Rodan and Mothra) to play for the cast over loudspeakers so that they would have something to react as they looked up – which they spent a lot of time doing.

“I had neck problems afterwards because we were always looking up so high,” Brown said.

The entire last hour of the presentation was directed solely to DC films, with many understandingly curious how Warner Bros. will react to the pummeling Justice League took last year. Based on what was shown the answer seems to be ‘do the opposite of everything we’ve done before’ with all of the DC films filled with bright colors and featuring jokes and fun adventure over brooding and melodrama.

And none were brighter, or more anticipated, than Wonder Woman 1984, the sequel to 2017’s smash hit due in 2019. Though just three weeks into shooting, director Patty Jenkins arrived with stars Gal Gadot and Chris Pine to a standing ovation and the world’s most obvious question: how is Chris Pine’s character still alive?

“I’m actually not here, I’m just hanging around for emotional support,” Pine said.

“He’s our water boy now,” Gadot explained.

Naturally no one would go into greater detail than that, beyond Jenkin’s assertion that it would be very important to Diana’s story and “I’m super excited for everyone to see the movie and find out.”

Jenkins did delve into why she picked 1984 for the setting of the film rather than present day.

“It was very much mankind at its best and worst. We were at the top but not aware of it … there were a lot of elegant and beautiful things about the 80s even as we reveled in the worst. So there was no better time to have Wonder Woman see us at our most extreme,” the director said.

Though filming was far too early to have anything remotely like a trailer ready, Jenkins did reveal some early footage from the film. In the scene Wonder Woman bursts into a very 1980s mall where she pushes a gushing young fan out of harm’s way and into the arms of a giant teddy bear. The heroine then disarmed a pair of would be robbers, crushing their guns like they were made of candy, wrapping them up in her lasso and jumping off a mezzanine to string them up like a pair of piñatas. It was all very Wonder Woman-y and a lot for the rest of the panels to live up to.

Not that that was going to stop Zachary Levy and the cast of Shazam! By far the brightest and most outright comedic of the films DC Entertainment brought to Comic-Con, Shazam! continued the through line of light, fun, family oriented superhero films DC seems to now be aiming for as it delved into a kid who becomes a superhero. Apparently no one could be better suited for that than Levy himself whom every member of the cast described as a ‘big kid.’

“Not in a bad way,” director David Sandberg explained. “He’s just very enthusiastic. Some people playing a kid would be just a bit dumber, but Zach was more enthusiastic.”

“More enthusiastic than dumb. I’ll take that,” Levy replied, taking sips from a Guinness he was carting around. “Jason Mamoa gave me this back stage, I’m having a great day.”

It’s a theme which easily plays out in real life as, after showing off the Shazam! trailer, the conversation quickly broke down into Levy’s passionate argument for why teleportation would be the best super power to have. I buy it. I now officially renounce invisibility as the best super power.

Warner Bros. saved it’s biggest splash for last as it filled the Hall H screen with waterfalls and then lifted Aquaman himself, Jason Mamoa, onto the main stage to thunderous applause.

“It’s been five or six years since I started this but here we are,” a happiest-I’ve-ever-seen Mamoa said. “I’ve got the giggle effect. It’s like when I’m quiet I’m really happy. I’m so happy.”

Mamoa was quickly joined by Amber Heard, Nicole Kidman (everyone keeps forgetting she’s in this movie but she is and she hits people with a big trident, a lot), Patrick Wilson, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and director James Wan who was extremely anxious to show off footage of the film.

“I’m super anxious but really excited at the same time. I know fans have been chomping at the bit but you’re finally going to get to see something,” Wan said. “I feel like there’s a lot of super hero stuff out there and I wanted ours to be more unique, like a super hero fantasy film.”

Nor was he playing around as he immersed the cast both in their characters and in water for the film’s extensive action sequences.

“We drowned Yahya,” Mamoa said, as Abdul-Mateen – who plays villain Black Manta — explained that he had never learned to swim and started teaching himself after getting the role.

“I’m so lucky my opening scene was just lying on a rock with big waves crashing on me,” Kidman added.

“I had a few of those ‘reconsidering life choices’ moments,” Heard added. “Everyone teases me that I’m wet and cold in all my movies. And I hate it. And I don’t really like to swim at all. So of course I get cast in Aquaman.”

“Either you’re in armor and wet or half naked in tattoos and wet. The pants I wear, they look like leather but it’s not, its denim and when it gets wet it gets hard to move. I had one scene where I had to get low and James kept saying ‘get lower!’ and I’m like ‘this is it,” Mamoa said, explaining the sheer amount of chafing the cast went through during filming as much of the underwater material was actually accomplished on stage with actors hooked into flying rigs and stunt harnesses.

“There was one day we were in five different harnesses,” said Wilson who plays the film’s other villain, Ocean Master. “When your stunt guy goes ‘I’ve never done this before’ you know you’re in for something new.”

The cast was in for something new as well. After the world premiere of the new Aquaman trailer, Wan brought out an almost entirely finished action sequence from the film as Aquaman and Meera, looking for lost ruins in a desert, are ambushed by Black Manta and his mercenaries.

A longer, more involved version of the trailer it shows just how fearsome Black Manta will be on screen using his armors laser beams and various gadgets, and also how crazed Wan’s action filmmaking has become. The beats take place on multiple levels as Meera runs from rooftop to rooftop while mercenaries chase her charging from building to building and attempting to shoot up at her through the floor. The sequence also showcases some of the repartee and humor the film is going for as Aquaman (less gloomy and more bro-y than in Justice League) and Meera attempt to dissect clues on their quest before ending on the reveal of something fans had been wondering about for a while – Mamoa in costume in the classic Aquaman look complete with green gloves and pants and chain mail shirt. The look comes across more like armor than spandex with the orange of the comics replaced with gold on the shirt. It fits right in with the colorful world Wan has created for Aquaman.

How good was it? When the lights came up Jason Mamoa grabbed up every chair on stage and tried to dash them to pieces on the floor out of sheer exuberance. THAT, is Hall H.

ComingSoon.net visits the set of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald

ComingSoon.net got a chance to head to London last year and check out the set of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald! While there we got the scoop on our next visit to the Wizarding World. We spoke to the cast and toured 1926 magical Paris, which was completely built. We also got some juicy info on the film.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald is the second of five all new adventures in J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World. The film stars Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamandar alongside returning stars Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, and Ezra Miller. They’re joined by Claudia Kim, Zoe Kravitz, Callum Turner,  with Jude Law as Dumbledore and Johnny Depp as the titular Grindelwald.

At the end of the first film, the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Depp) was captured by MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America), with the help of Newt Scamander (Redmayne). But, making good on his threat, Grindelwald escaped custody and has set about gathering followers, most unsuspecting of his true agenda: to raise pure-blood wizards up to rule over all non-magical beings.

We spoke to director David Yates about the story for the sequel which he called, “a very interesting synthesis between a sort of political thriller and love story. So it’s a sort of fusion of genres, if you like, which I think makes it quite unique in this series of films that we’ve been making based on her [J.K. Rowling] work…. Jo starts up brilliantly with the way she lays out the script. It’s a really generous interesting thriller/love story.”

Yates also spoke about Jude Law and how he’s changed the dynamic from the first film, saying: So we’re seeing Dumbledore as a young man and (he‘s) quite a rebel. He’s quite complicated. He’s far from perfect. He’s a inspiring teacher. All the pupils love him. But as ever, being Dumbledore, he’s a wonderful manipulator and he has this incredible ability to sort of maneuver people into situations that they may not want to be maneuvered into. Jude brings this amazing freshness and sexiness and- and sensuality and sort of wit and sort of charisma to the role. It’s actually really wonderful to see this character as a young man and with Jude playing him. He’s doing a really wonderful job.”

Producer David Heyman spoke about the scene that was important to him, going back to into the world of Harry Potter and Hogwarts. How great is that? Seeing a younger Dumbledore and seeing he and Newt’s first meeting, I think, will be a thing that the fans will really love. Because here is this character who is such a central part of the ‘Harry Potter’ stories, and to see him earlier on, as it were, very much, related to the Dumbledore of future. But at the same time, you realize in the Potter films that he was working things to his own end, he knew the path. He knew what was happening. He understood the back stories. While here, you see Dumbledore and there are remnants of that and you see echoes of that. But he’s also wonderful and colorful and magical and wise and he’s the character we know, but younger, and we see slightly different shades.”

We got a chance to walk through some concept art and learned that there are a number of locations we’re going to visit. We’re going to see Hogwarts, a bird market, Kama’s hideout [Kama (Willaim Nadylam) is an elegant French-African wizard who says he is the last male in his pureblood family line. After many years of obsessively searching for Credence, he has finally tracked him down in Paris. But to what end?], Pere Lachaise cemetery, Nicholas Flamel’s house, a rally thrown by Grindelwald, Place de la Concorde in Paris, a rooftop hideown, a ship, the Circus Arcanus and Newt’s basement and home in London.

We’re also going to see magical Paris in 1926, which, as we said, was completely built. We got to walk around the set, which included shops like Ar. Aziz Branchifflore which sells silks and herbs, Cancan Nantais, Epicerie Frutierie, Comce de Vins, a pharmacy, the Rue de Montmorency, Chaudrons, which sells cauldrons, a store for Quidditch equipment, a cafe and advertisements for the Cirque Arcanus, which is a magical circus that is going to play a big role in the story. Each window was full of magical implements, wands, spell components and more. If they don’t add this to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in California and Florida, they’re nuts. It was incredible to be able to walk around and be a part of it.

We learned a few things about the story as well. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald begins in a MACUSA prison, where Grindelwald is a hero to all the bad guys. He’s sent to Europe to be tried though, and, of course, he tries to escape. We’ll visit a ship carrying Credence to find who he is, which involves a magical circus. We know that Tina and Newt haven’t seen each other, but that he’ll meet up with Dumbledore on a foggy night on top of St. Paul’s Cathedral in London. Jacob and Queenie end up in Europe for their own reasons and we know that they meet up. We’ll meet Nicholas Flamel on the Rue de Montmorency, where the real man actually lived. We’ll also visit the Department Magique, which we got to walk through. It’s very green and very nouveau with a glass roof dome decorated with animals. It’s stunning and imposing like the Ministry of Magic we know from the Harry Potter films, and even the floors were raked. It has a very elegant and very Slytherin feel to it, and it’s incredibly powerful-looking.

Johnny Depp Confirms Grindelwald Will Return for Fantastic Beasts 3

Johnny Depp confirms Grindelwald will return for Fantastic Beasts 3

During a recent interview with Collider, Fantastic Beasts: and the Crimes of Grindelwald star Johnny Depp discussed what brought him to the role and let slip a fairly hefty bit of news: he will return for the third Fantastic Beasts film.

During the interview, Depp recalled some of his more memorable characters, including Edward Scissorhands and Jack Sparrow before the interview turned its focus on Fantastic Beasts, in which the actor plays the legendary (and infamous) Grindelwald.

“It was amazing. It came out of nowhere,” Depp said. “Someone said J.K. Rowling would like to talk to me. I spoke to a few producers and the director and to J.K. and had long conversations basically about the Grindelwald character. J.K. said something I did not expect to hear because obviously her detail to her characters and those wizarding worlds is astonishing. The fact that she said, ‘I can’t wait to see what you do with the character.’ Just to hand it off to me with that degree of trust, I was really touched, blown away by that. So I jumped into locating the character and I had my ideas. I came in and it all seemed to work out. Grindelwald is an interesting character. His intentions in his mind are for the greater good, but there have been other people in world politics and such who felt the same way. [chuckles] He’s very dedicated to his beliefs. He’s not a fun character; he’s not funny.”

When asked if he enjoyed playing him, Depp said he appreciated the opportunity to play a character who is teetering to be a fascist, but who is also sensitive, concerned and manipulative. Then he dropped the golden nugget:

“The possibilities in that world are wide open, so you can really try anything. So it was a gas and I look forward to the next installment, which I think we start the middle of next year.”

Depp confirmed he’s not only returning for Fantastic Beasts 3, but that the film will start shooting in the middle of next year. Until then, we’re left waiting for the release of the next installment, which hits theaters in a little over a month.

Details revealed for Crimes of Grindelwald soundtrack, two tracks released early

One of the best aspects of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was its lush, majestic score composed by James Newton Howard. Luckily, the famed composer has returned for the sequel Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald and WaterTower Music is going all out for the soundtrack — and even released a couple of tracks early for streaming and purchase.

The Crimes of Grindelwald soundtrack will feature a whopping 25 tracks, all of which will be available for digital purchase on November 9. The CD will hit shelves on November 30, while the vinyl is scheduled to go out in January 2019. In addition to the score, the soundtrack will treat fans to three solo piano cues performed by James Newton Howard and not heard in the film: Dumbledore’s Theme (Solo Piano)”, “Fantastic Beasts Theme (Solo Piano)” and “Leta’s Theme (Solo Piano).” Those three tracks are scheduled to be released October 26, 2018.

For those fans unable to wait, WaterTower has also released two tracks for early streaming and purchase titled “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” and “Salamander Eyes,” which you can listen to HERE. And just so you know, the music is quite fantastic, featuring lush, beautiful, choir-driven melodies reminiscent of Danny Elfman’s Edward Scissorhands and Howard’s own Maleficent.

“To work on Fantastic Beasts is a wonderful musical opportunity,” describes composer James Newton Howard. “The movie is delightful, substantial, and complex; and [director] David Yates focuses very seriously on the music and is a truly passionate and enthusiastic collaborator.”

In an effort to thwart Grindelwald’s plans, Albus Dumbledore (Law) enlists his former student Newt Scamander, who agrees to help, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead. Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided wizarding world.

Fantastic Beasts – The Crimes of Grindelwald Review:

What happens when you take a beloved generation defining epic and attempt to craft a new story for it delving into the original’s deep backstory?  History says the odds aren’t good for creating a self-sustaining piece of entertainment (take note Game of Thrones spin-off producers).  But history is also replete with exceptions to the rules. Theoretically it should be possible for a prequel to dance over the mire of fan service and clumsy story arc welding to create something that stands on its own.  So how does Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald fare?

Mire, miles and miles of mire.  And in the center of it all is Grindelwald (Depp) himself, the evil wizard captured in the first Fantastic Beasts who quickly escapes and returns to his plans for a revolt to subjugate the entire world under wizard control.  But also in the center is mischievous Defense Against the Dark Arts professor Albus Dumbledore (Law) attempting to contain Grindelwald but refusing to move against him openly despite being admittedly the greatest wizard in the world.  Instead he relies on the magical creature lover Newt Scamander (Redmayne), sending him to Paris to search for Grindelwald, as well as his friends Tina and Queenie Goldstein (Waterson and Sudol) who have disappeared searching for the reincarnated magical menace Credence Barebone (Miller).  Which is lucky because his old American compatriot Jacob (Fogler) has recovered his memories of Queenie and wants to find her.  But doing so puts Newt in the crosshairs of his old paramour Leta Lestrange (Kravitz) …

…and on and on and on. So many characters.  So little time.   Grindelwald has a lot of irons in the fire from the last film, while also attempting to set up the next part of the story and keep everything moving.  The end result feels less like a film and more like the penultimate episode of a TV season, building up to a big finale, but in the meantime a lot of pieces need to be moved into place.  It’s an overwhelming requirement which tramples over every other part of the film; there is just too much being required of the film and not enough time to do it all.  Characters disappear for extended periods, popping back up again only for specific plot requirements.  Besides so many returning friendly faces from the previous film Grindelwald dumps a heap more onto the mess, playing into the theme of choosing sides.  But choosing sides means we need enough people to fill out both teams.  If Grindelwald is about anything, it is about that.

There are still a lot of good bits.  This is director David Yates’ sixth film in the franchise; he can do this sort of thing in his sleep by now.  It’s glib to say that it feels like he is, but that doesn’t change the fact that it feels like he is.  More importantly, his arrival on the series showcased a gradual drop in the amount of whimsy involved and when it does appear it seems spectacularly out of place.  With his deep shadows, aversion to primary colors and hand-held camera work Fantastic Beasts wants to make the magical feel real, a desire frequently at odds with itself.  As a result tone is all over the place.  A scene full of dark foreboding featuring Depp’s Grindelwald smoking from a skull in order to see the future will be followed immediately by Redmayne’s Scamander playing with one of his whimsical animals.  Is this a light adventure full of fun moments for all ages, or a dark fantasy delving into the depths of human evil?  No one knows.

Law makes an engaging Dumbledore, simultaneously of a piece with the other takers of the role while also making it firmly his own.  His complex relationship with Grindelwald is one of the few pieces of the film which creates the sort of high melodrama the film seems to aspire to.  [Compared to that, though, Newt and his undercooked star-crossed romance with Tina suffers terribly.]

Would a change of director matter, though?  It’s hard to say, with so much of what the new movies are trapped within its creator’s requirements.  One of Rowling’s great strengths as a writer has been her way with a MacGuffin.  Each of her Harry Potter stories (even the ones that may not have needed it) revolved around a mystery that needed unraveling, one which would eventually tie into both its main character(s) and the larger story they were involved in.  If nothing else it kept pages turning, kept audiences wrapped up in discovering the answer, and usually providing a framework for all the other pieces to be latched onto.

Fantastic Beasts, not content with just one mystery, has at least a half dozen – one for each major character.  Where is Tina and what is she doing?  Who has Queenie and what has happened to her?  Who is Credence’s real family?  What happened to Leta’s brother Corvus?  How is it all connected to the mysterious Yusuf Kama (Nadylam)?  Why can’t Dumbledore face Grindelwald directly?  These are all interesting character developments and the way they point towards a joint theme of the weight past choices can have on the future is potentially compelling but needs time and focus to be developed and both are in short supply.   That problem doesn’t stop Rowling or her compatriots from dropping ever more into the story – an army of quislings for Grindelwald replete with interesting names and looks but not much else, Newt’s officious older brother, the cursed Nagini who turns out to have been a witch before she was a snake, the oft-mentioned but never seen alchemist Nicholas Flamel – much of it aimed at the series considerable fan base but incomprehensible to anyone else.  This is nowhere more noticeable than the final minutes which plays as if all we know about the series has been turned on its head but instead leaves nothing but question marks.  [It’s still unclear what Kravitz was meant to be doing in her last scene].

What Fantastic Beasts desperately needs is an editor (or a director) with the ability to streamline Rowling’s imagination and fashion it into a single, comprehensible story.  Instead it’s got a craftsman, one who can serve a story up but not necessarily make it watchable.
